The Toronto Blue Jays have won an award for their grassroots charitable work to promote amateur baseball across the country.

The organization was recognized Thursday with Major League Baseball’s Commissioner’s Award for Philanthropic Excellence, handed out annually since 2010.

The Jays won the award for a series of youth programs provided across Canada and collectively known as the “Blue Jays Baseball Academy.”

Programming includes baseball leagues in low-income neighbourhoods, the refurbishment of baseball fields and recreational centres, and instructional clinics for kids.

Team president and CEO Paul Beeston said the organization, as Canada’s only major-league team, made a decision several years ago to reach out to communities beyond Toronto.

“The support we have received from all provinces has been overwhelming and it was imperative that our programs reflected that passion,” he said.

Beeston also thanked the charity’s partners: Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, Baseball Canada, Little League Canada and Toronto Community Housing.
